Description
You're an assistant manager in a California supermarket. You've got a wife and kids who love you. You don't tell lies, and you don't oil cucumber because it's dishonest. You're a good man. Not a great man, but a good man.

Suddenly, out of the blue, God grants you an interview. (He misspells "interview", but nobody's perfect.) He tells you He's picked you to carry His message to all mankind. Somehow, that's an offer you can't refuse. What happens next is nobody's guess - and the subject of Carl Reiner's nimble and very funny film, "Oh God!"

George Burns play God. At 81, with an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1975 hit "The Sunshine Boys", Burns timing and delivery are flawless. If you never imagined him as God before, you'll wonder how the idea could have escaped you. The part seems made for him.

John Denver plays the role of Jerry Landers, the Everyman God calls upon to do His bidding. In his first film role, Denver projects the some natural sympathetic qualities that made him an international TV and recording star. He also give us something extra: a convincing hint of melancholy that makes him human predicament all too believable.

Larry does have a predicament. His wife tries, but can't quite understand. His kids think it all sound bananas. Theologians decide he's fanatic. and his supermarket employers are not amused. But God looks on the bright side of things. "Lose a job, sve a world. Not a bad deal."

"Oh God!" leaves us with messages, but a gentle message that never intrudes upon our laughter. Not since "Miracle on 34th Street" has been such a successful comedy of a simple-hearted faith in a complex, doubting world.
